The Right Toothpaste for Your Child

Posted .

As you browse the oral hygiene store for toothpaste for your child, you’re probably a little overwhelmed by the number of toothpastes available. Well, you’re not alone. Many people don’t know exactly how to choose the right toothpaste, so they become a bit stressed. To help you, our dentists, Drs. Tracy Bowden, Austin Bowden, and Margie Hernandez would like to give you the tips you need to choose the right toothpaste for your child. When you’re at the store, it’s best to select a:

-Toothpaste that has been approved by the American Dental Association: The ADA Seal of Approval proves that the toothpaste is safe and effective. This is because the ADA tested its many different features thoroughly. An approved toothpaste shouldn’t harm or damage your child’s smile.

-Toothpaste that is safe to swallow: If your child doesn’t quite know to spit the toothpaste into the sink when they are done brushing, then you need swallow-safe toothpaste. If they swallow regular toothpaste, it can make their stomach upset.

-Toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride: Your child should get enough fluoride in the foods and water they consume throughout the day. Any more fluoride can harm the teeth and cause a problem called fluorosis. So, it’s best to stay away from fluoride toothpaste until your dentist says otherwise.
