At Kids First Pediatric Dentistry in Timonium, Maryland, Dr. Austin Bowden have found that dental checkups and cleanings throughout the school year are sometimes hard to manage. That is why many families take care of those appointments during the summer months, to prepare for the school year. A confident, healthy smile goes hand-in-hand with new clothes, a haircut, and school supplies to prepare them for the school year ahead. To help your child have a healthy smile throughout the year, the following will help:
— Does your child engage in sports? If so, make sure they use a mouth guard to protect their pearly whites during sports, PE classes, and playground time.
— Does your child eat a nutritious lunch? Pack healthy lunches and snacks, and if your child eats the school lunch cafeteria food, sit down with your child each week to review the school lunch menu and encourage healthy eating choices.
— When your child comes in for a routine dental cleaning, protect their teeth with fluoride treatments and dental sealants, as needed. Fluoride keeps tooth enamel strong and cavity resistant while sealants form a protective barrier on back teeth to keep out dental plaque.
— Have you checked your child’s toothbrush lately? The ADA states that toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. They also recommend using only products that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure that it is both safe and effective. We recommend updating their toothbrush regularly with a new, child-sized ADA approved toothbrush. Toothbrushes are most effective when they are in tip-top condition!
