The grinding of teeth, also known as bruxism, is a fairly common dental problem among patients of all ages. Bruxism can occur during the day or while your child sleeps at night. It can be caused by a wide range of factors, including jaw misalignment, stress, or as a side effect of certain medications. Children with developmental disorders or brain injuries may also be more likely to grinding their teeth. In many cases, parents will be able to hear their children grinding their teeth.

Symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Frequent headaches – especially when your child has just woken up
  • Injured teeth and gums (teeth that are cracked, chipped, or excessively worn, etc.)
  • Ear pain
  • Loud grinding and clicking sounds
  • Tightening and clenching of the jaw muscles
  • Aching jaws – especially in the morning
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods

The treatment our dentists recommend for your child’s bruxism will depend on the cause of the grinding. If bruxism is caused by misaligned teeth, we may recommend altering the biting surface of the teeth with dental crowns or other treatments, or beginning orthodontic treatments. If caused by stress, our pediatric dentists may advise relaxation classes, professional therapy, or other exercises. A pediatrician may also provide muscle relaxants to help reduce jaw clenching and muscle spasms. We may also recommend night guards to protect your child’s mouth while they sleep.
