Pregnancy and Dental Care

Posted .

If you are thinking about getting pregnant or if you are pregnant, you have a great deal on your mind. There are visits to the doctor, you need to pick out furniture for the nursery, baby clothes bottles and diapers. And of course, you need to find a name for the newest member of your family!

In the midst of all of the activity, you should plan for a visit to the dentist. If you are not pregnant but planning for it, you should see the dentist beforehand. The dentist can give you a cleaning and an exam, and take care of cavities or other problems. That will be one less thing on your mind after the baby arrives. If you are already pregnant, you will want to schedule any non-emergency dental procedures during your second trimester.  The second trimester is the best time for you, and the safest time for your baby to see the dentist.

Your dentist also needs to know if you are pregnant if you require x-rays. Although x-rays are safe, the dental staff may decide not to take x-rays during your visit or can provide you with an apron and collars to shield you and your baby from the radiation.

During your pregnancy, you will experience hormonal changes. Those changes can increase your chances of gingivitis, which can develop into periodontitis if it is not treated. Morning sickness can result in extra acid in your mouth, which can contribute to tooth decay. You may also develop pregnancy tumors, which are overgrowths on your gums. They are benign; however, the dentist can remove them if they are giving you problems.

While you are pregnant, you should continue to brush twice a day and floss once a day. If you are thinking about having a baby, or are in the second trimester of your pregnancy, Dr. Austin Bowden will be happy to see you! If you would like to make an appointment at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry in Timonium, Maryland, call 410-828-5699. We’ll be happy to help you get ready to welcome your new baby!
